Phillips called on mission to Hong Kong

 Zachary Phillips of Pewaukee, Wis., formerly of Red Wing, has been called to serve a two-year mission for the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. On June 5, he entered the Missionary Training Center in Provo, Utah, to begin training and learning the Cantonese language prior to serving in the China Hong Kong mission.

Phillips, a 2012 graduate of Red Wing High School, worked for Sargent's Nursery during high school to help pay for his mission. He attended Brigham Young University in Provo prior to his call. After his mission, he plans to return to BYU and then go on to law school.

Mass celebrates Besetzny's ordination

There will be a Mass of thanksgiving with Corene Besetzny at 5 p.m. Sunday July 21 at Christ Episcopal Church. She was recently ordained.

The potluck will follow the service. Bring a salad of appetizer to share. Dessert and beverages will be provided.

Summer Jam set in Cannon Falls

Summer Jam 2013 will be July 23-24. St. Pius V Catholic Church, Cannon Falls, will take youths in grades 6-12 to Valleyfair and then hold a lock-in. Students may bring a friend.

Cost is $22; free for the lock-in only.

Registration is due July 17. Parental release forms are required.

Final audition rehearse set for Bells of the Bluffs

Bells of the Bluffs is a new community handbell ensemble open to anyone in the Red Wing area. A preliminary workshop to help prepare for auditions will be 5 to 8 p.m. July 18 at First Lutheran Church.

The group will promote musical excellence through handbells by challenging interested ringers to tackle more difficult works. The group also will work to promote an appreciation and understanding of handbells.

Marilee Anderson, minister of music at First Lutheran, will be the director.

Widows meet in Lake City

The Widows Speak group will meet at 10 a.m. Wednesday July 17 at First Lutheran Church, Lake City. All widows are welcome to join.

Supper served this Sunday

Sunday Supper/Loaves and Fishes is a full meal prepared and served free of charge and open to everyone. It is being served at 5 p.m. July 14 at the First United Methodist Church, 403 East Ave.
