Region under air pollution advisory

People in the eastern two-thirds of Minnesota are under an air pollution health alert today.

The Minnesota Pollution Control Agency issued the alert this morning, saying air quality is unhealthy for groups of people such as those with cardiovascular or respiratory disease, the elderly, children and people who participate in activities requiring extended or heavy exertion. The MPCA advised people in those groups to "postpone or reduce vigorous activity and minimize exposure to local sources of air pollution."

Friday's alert comes after an advisory issued Thursday for southern and western Minnesota. The alert for western Minnesota was canceled this morning.

Pollution problems are blamed on a strong temperature inversion accompanied by melting snow and morning fog. The combination is trapping fine particles near the ground.

Air quality should improve as a slow-moving frontal system moves across Minnesota today, the agency reported.
