Red Wing's second grade will grow by one classroom.
Following the pending closure of St. Joseph Catholic School announced earlier this year, Red Wing Public Schools will be creating an additional section of second grade for the next school year.
The School Board approved the decision, aimed mainly at keeping class size down, 7-0 Monday night.
Currently, St. Joe's has 15 kids in first grade. Red Wing Supt. Stan Slessor said 14 of them are expected to enroll in the public school next year. If the school didn't add an additional second-grade section, each classroom would have about 27 students in it.
"We do not feel comfortable at that age of having 27 students per section," Slessor said.
Currently, there are eight sections of second grade. With the addition of the ninth section, class size should be around 24 students, what Slessor called an "effective level" in an email to board members.
The additional section will be at Burnside. The cost for an additional teacher and supplies for the section will be covered by government revenue for the additional students.
St. Joe's other classes have between five and eight students enrolled, and Red Wing will be able to accommodate those students without additional sections, Slessor said.
