Red Wing summer reading programs set
The Red Wing Public Library's annual summer reading program kicks off the week of June 11 with the theme of "Dream Big: READ!"
Kids can have fun reading and build toward Red Wing Waterpark coupons at the same time.
The program will help motivate kids to read and maintain their reading skills, develop positive attitudes about reading and provide opportunities to learn and have fun in a group, library staff said.
Teens entering grades 7 through 12 this fall can "Own the Night!" this summer. Simply fill out and return book review forms, which will be available in the library's teen area and at the service desk beginning June 11, and earn coupons for the water park.
T.O.O.L. -- Teens of our Library -- also will meet monthly starting Monday June 18 from 1:30 to 2:30 p.m.
Preschoolers up through incoming sixth-graders can get coupons by filling out and turning in forms for every 20 minutes or more of reading -- or being read to -- for seven days.
Forms can be submitted through July 31. Day cares can hand in one form per group rather than per child.
A number of other activities for all ages with camping themes also dot the summer.
Families with children entering second grade and younger can enjoy stories, rhymes and songs and activities Wednesdays June 13 to July 25 at 10:30 a.m. Activities include learning about nocturnal animals, the night sky and more.
The same story time is offered for day cares with children entering second grade or younger on Thursdays June 14 to July 26 at 10:30 a.m.
Upcoming third- through sixth-graders will enjoy competitions, crafts and a visit from the Environmental Learning Center during their program, which runs Tuesdays June 12 to July 24 at 10:30 a.m.
Participants can become a gardener, a rock star (during karaoke), create edible campfires and glow-in-the-dark goo and more.
More detailed schedules are available at the library and online.
Planning a long trip this summer? Travel kits also are available from the library. Staff will put together books, magazines, CDs and movies to enjoy on the road and throughout the trip.
Forms are available at the library and must be submitted seven days in advance.
All library programs are free. For more information on the summer programs, travel kits and more, visit www.redwing.lib.mn.us, call 651-385-3645 or stop by the library at 225 East Ave.
