Board OK's land purchase
Red Wing School Board voted 7-0 to approve the purchase of about 40 acres of land near Red Wing High School's athletic field for $150,000. The board discussed the purchase of the land from Riverbank in the Highlands subdivision in a closed meeting May 6.
Director of Finance Brad Johnson said the district originally sold the land in 2006 for $248,000. A housing subdivision that was planned for the area was never built.
Johnson said repurchasing the land will give the district control of the area near the high school.
"Hopefully we can be more thoughtful in the future," Board member Paul Kramp said before making a motion to approve the purchase agreement.
The money for the purchase will come out of the district's general fund. The district hopes to close on the land by July 1.
FY 14 budget approved
The board approved a preliminary budget for fiscal year 2014. The new budget must be approved by June 30 each year, though it may be amended as needed throughout the year, Director of Finance Brad Johnson said.
The FY14 budget shows a slight reduction overall, Johnson said, because the district's debt service fund dropped significantly after building debts were paid off last year.
Adjustments will be made to the budget as the district gets more information on state and federal aid and enrollment numbers.
