Red Wing man injured in collision with train
A Red Wing man was taken to Mayo Clinic Health System – Red Wing and airlifted to St. Mary’s in Rochester after his vehicle struck the side of a train Saturday afternoon.
Jason Shequen, 26, 2118 Pioneer Road, was headed eastbound on Flower Valley Road in Wacouta Township at 2:25 p.m. when he fell asleep and struck the side of a southbound Canadian Pacific freight train, according to the Goodhue County Sheriff’s Office.
Shequen’s truck was spun around and struck the stop arm, breaking it off. He was trapped inside the vehicle and was extricated by the Red Wing Fire Department and was transported from the scene by ambulance to Mayo – Red Wing where he was airlifted to St. Mary’s in Rochester, the sheriff’s office said.
According to the sheriff’s office he was conscious at the scene.
The train continued southbound, unaware an accident had occurred. Train traffic was stopped until around 4:30 when the scene was cleared, according to the sheriff’s office.
