Red Wing defeated Classic Cannon Valley League rival Northfield 5-2 on Saturday afternoon, thanks to reliable defense and timely hits, according to assistant manager/player Andy Gibart.

Each team got on the board in the first inning. Red Wing added two in the fifth, and Northfield's rally ended in the sixth with a single run.

Every league game is important, Gibart said, and Aces did what they needed to do to win.

"We capitalized when we had guys on base and built a nice cushion to finish the game," he said.

Offensively, Adam Thygesen, Kyle Blahnik and Steve Boldt had especially good outings against Northfield's Jeremy Kruse.

Thygesen went 2-for-4 with two runs and two stolen bases, while Kyle Blahnik, who was 1-for-2 with a walk, had two stolen bases, two runs and an RBI. Boldt was 2-for-3 with a walk and two RBI.

Solid defense, however, won the day.

Gibart was the beneficiary, earning the win on the mount. He went seven innings, giving up five hits and two runs -- one earned.

He gave up two walks and had two strikeouts.

"It was just a solid defensive output," he said. "We got out of a couple jams. In sixth, we got out of a first-and-third situation."

Dustin LaRue pitched the final two innings for the save, giving up a hit and a walk, but countering with two strikeouts.

"I guess you could say we continue the theme this year: We've had great offensive games. When we haven't, we've had great defense and pitched good enough to win," Gibart said.

The Aces are 8-1.
