Port Authority refreshes website
The Red Wing Port Authority has taken a crash course in the digital age.
Earlier this week the group launched its new website, which director Myron White said he hopes will draw more people to the Red Wing area.
The existing website was at least five years old, White said. The technology needed updating, and "it was time for a new look."
The new site features GIS technology, which allows developers and businesses to find a lot of information about the area quickly.
"They can look at a building in downtown Red Wing and say "what are the demographics of the people who live within a 10 mile or 15 mile radius?" he said. "They can see if this fits the particular kind of business they want to open."
The website also incorporates social networking aspects, something Port Authority staff have been working on recently.
"We're kind of taking a crash course in social networking," White said. "We're trying to have a more significant presence."
The port teamed up with Little Falls-based Golden Shovel Agency earlier this year to design and develop the website.
White said the port will continue working with the company to keep the website fresh and updated.
"With a limited staff, we don't have a lot of time," he said. "They'll help us through that."
They'll also be able to track usage of the website, something the port hasn't done in the past.
White said he hopes the new website and presence on Facebook and Twitter will let the port connect more with current and potential clients.
"We realize that the clients we have today are very different than the clients we had 10 years ago," White said. "They go to those sources for information, and we have to be there."
