Police respond to sexual assault complaint
Red Wing police were notified by staff of Mayo Clinic Health System in Red Wing around 1:30 p.m. Aug. 15 of a woman who was forced to have sexual contact with a known male earlier that morning.
The victim stated she was awoken when Shane Lawrence Crandell, 41, 1116 Bush St., tried to have sex with her, according to a complaint filed in Goodhue County District Court.
After breaking away from Crandell she left the bedroom and went downstairs, repeatedly telling him to stop, but he grabbed her and pulled her back upstairs, the complaint states.
Crandell allegedly told the complainant he would hit her if she didn’t do what he told her and she told police she was scared of what he would do if he found out she reported the assault.
The victim stated Crandell was arrested two years ago for domestic assault against her and an incident of this sort usually happens twice a month and has been going on for over a year, according to the complaint.
According to court documents, Crandell pleaded guilty in Goodhue County District Court to misdemeanor violation of a domestic abuse no contact order in December 2011 and was sentenced to six days local confinement and one year supervised probation.
Crandell was charged on Monday with felony third-degree criminal sexual conduct – force or coercion – which is punishable by 15 years in prison and a $30,000 fine, and felony fourth-degree criminal sexual conduct, which carries a maximum sentence of 10 years jail time and a $20,000 fine.
Crandell also faces two gross misdemeanor charges of fifth-degree criminal sexual conduct – non-consensual sex contact – and domestic assault, both of which are punishable by one year in prison and a $3,000 fine.
The next court appearance scheduled for Crandell is Sept. 19.
