Plein Air attracts regional artists

Richard Abraham, winner of Best Collection in the 2012 Plein Air competition, painted a pastoral scene of tiger lilies.

Red Wing Arts Association begins the summer with the Plein Air Art and Music Festival with a kick-off Monday June 24 and runs through Saturday June 29.

En plein air is a French expression meaning in the open air.

The festival features more than 40 artists from the region painting in the open air at various area locations throughout the week. The public is invited to observe the artists at work.

Two groups of artists will participate in the 2013 Plein Air. Featured artists were juried to paint in the show. They have committed to being in Red Wing for the entire festival.

Recognizing that not all artists interested in plein air can take the time to devote a week to painting on site, RWAA offers an open class option.

Open cass artists will participate in any events of the festival except Quick Paint Saturday June 29. Interested artists may register for open class until 5 p.m. Monday June 24.

Featured artists from Red Wing include Lynn Brown, Sarah Singer and Dan Wiemer.

On Friday June 28, Red Wing Arts Association hosts the premier arts event of the summer from 7 to 9 p.m. at the festival tent by the Depot.

Plein Air Riverfront Cocktail Reception is by ticket only, available for purchase at the Depot Gallery. The $50 admission includes the opportunity to meet the artists, enjoy hors d'oeuvres and refreshments, including a signature cocktail for the event.

Attendees will have the first opportunity to view the paintings completed during the week. In addition, the $50 admission may be applied toward the purchase of a 2013 Plein Air painting that evening only.

Scott Lloyd Anderson from the Twin Cities, serves as judge. He will review the work of the participating artists Friday afternoon and award prizes to be announced at the reception.

Saturday begins with the Quick Paint from 9 to 11 a.m. Plein air artists must complete their painting in two hours, then frame it and submit it within 30 minutes of close of painting.

The public reception and gallery opening will be held from 2 to 5 p.m. It features paintings produced during the week from the Plein Air featured artists, including the morning's Quick Paint artwork. The winner of the Quick Paint will be announced at 4 p.m.

The Plein Air Gallery Show continues at Red Wing Depot Gallery thru Aug. 26.

Paintings by the open class artists will be displayed in the Depot Gallery during the public reception. The Plein Air Committee will select the best open class participant to be juried in for the 2014 Plein Air.

Following the public reception, the Rolling River Music Festival will be held at Central Park Band Shell from 5 to 10 p.m.

Red Wing Arts Association Plein Air Art and Music Festival is recognized as a premier outdoor painting event in the upper Midwest, organizers noted.
