The recent cold snap has resulted in spots of the Mississippi River freezing near Red Wing — an oddity since the Prairie Island nuclear plant went online in 1973. Unit 2 has not been releasing heated water in late 2013 because of refueling. (Republican Eagle photo by Anne Jacobson)2 / 5

Did you know…Sundogs are produced by hexagonal plate shaped ice crystals drifting with their large faces nearly horizontal. All crystals refract the sun’s rays but we only see those that glint their light towards our eyes and are 22° or more from the sun and at the same altitude. This amazing Sundog appeared at sunrise over Red Wing on Monday. It was all over in 15 minutes. Photo by George Mead4 / 5
The Goodhue County History Center Children's Christmas Party was Sunday. They decorated a tree with ornaments they made the way it was done in the 1950s — using flour-water paste, popsicle sticks and construction paper — and frosted sugar cookies. -- photo by Ruth Nerhaugen 5 / 5
