PC, Elmwood end losing streaks in playoff wins
Both the Plum City prep baseball and Elmwood prep softball teams endured long losing streaks this season. But both those streaks came to an end in the first round of WIAA regional tournaments Friday.
Plum City whipped Clear Lake at home 12-1 in Division 4 for just their third win this season against 17 losses. The Blue Devils had lost 16 games in a row before the five-inning win at Legion Park.
Chad Fox was the winning pitcher. He struck out 14 batters and had three hits. Kasey Kruger led Plum City at the plate with three hits, two doubles and two runs scored. PC's Austin Coss and Brady Myer both had two hits and Myer scored twice.
Elwmood's softball team had lost 12 in a row and was only 3-19 this season. But one of those wins was over Glenwood City and the Raiders topped the Hilltoppers again, winning 3-1 at home. EHS plated two runs in the bottom of the sixth to break a 1-1 tie and winning McKayla Brunner shutdown GC in the top of the seventh.
Brunner also had two hits to lead Elmwood in hitting. Teammate Krista Peterson belted two doubles.
Both teams move on in the playoffs with Plum City baseball playing at Elmwood in the regional semifinal on Tuesday while Elmwood softball is at Cornell in the regional semifinals, also on Tuesday. Despite being the No. 1 seed in the regional, EHS does have a victory over the Chiefs as they split a non-conference doubleheader. It was the last win Elmwood had before their losing streak.
