Panthers one win away from another state tournament, will play final today
VIROQUA - Another pitching gem from James Georgakas along with timely hitting and good base running led a 1-0 sectional semifinal win for the Ellsworth High School baseball team Tuesday over Viroqua.
The No. 6 ranked Panthers, 15-3 overall, will play in the WIAA Division 2 Viroqua Sectional final today, weather permitting, against Barron, who won a grueling 4-3 win in 12 innings over Rice Lake in the first game of the day. The first pitch is scheduled for 4 p.m.
Gegorgakas struck out 11 Viroqua batters and allowed the Blackhawks, 16-8 overall, just two hits in seven innings. Much like the regional final win over Prescott, he pitched himself out of precarious situations, like two-on no outs he and team faced in the top of the fifth (Ellsworth was the home team). Georgakas was able to struck out two batters and the 'Hawks were unable to get anything across in their best opportunity all day.
While Georgakas continued to pitch well, EHS's Dennis Schutz continued to hit well, getting two for the ballgame including the RBI which scored Ellsworth's lone run in the third inning. Dan Giese scored that run and had two hits as well. The Panthers were able to score at least run with aggressive base running, five steals in all, to negate losing pitcher Mitch Stalsberg's 14 strikeouts.
No. 2 Lodi and No. 7 Waupun won their Division 2 sectional tournaments yesterday and will play each other in the state semifinals next Wednesday at 8 p.m. at Fox Cities Stadium in Appleton. The Denmark Sectional is also to be completed today as well. The winner of that sectional will play either Ellsworth or Barron at 6 p.m. next Wednesday in the other state semifinal.
