Panthers get past Prescott 4-1, win regional title

HAGER CITY - Only one of these two state finalists from last year was going to leave Brown Field still alive in the WIAA Division 2 regional baseball tournament. And that turned out to be Ellsworth in a 4-1 decision over Pierce County rival Prescott Wednesday.

Ellsworth jumped ahead 2-0 in the first after a pair of wild pitches/past balls took place with the bases loaded and scored Dan Giese and Dennis Schutz. Prescott cut the lead to one in the fifth after Owen Schommer belted an RBI-double which plated Marty Harris.

But EHS plated two insurance runs, one coming in the bottom of the fifth after an outfield error off Schutz's single scores Giese; Then Chandler Flynn scored in the sixth on a two-out RBI-single by Tyler Koller.

Prescott put base runners on in the fifth and sixth innings but winning pitcher James Georgakas turned back each threat, finishing with seven strikeouts and allowing just four hits. He had a no-hitter through four innings. It was Georgakas's first-ever win over Prescott.

Ellsworth will play in the sectional tournament next Tuesday in Viroqua against either Viroqua or West Salem, who are playing their regional final today. The game is slated to begin at 2 p.m.
