Panthers cruise past two teams
SOMERSET, Wis. -- Ellsworth easily dispatched of its two opponents at Tuesday evening's Wisconsin Interscholastic Athletic Association Division 2 Somerset Team Sectional.
With the wins, the Panthers claimed their fifth straight title and a berth in the state team tournament March 6-7.
The No. 2-ranked Panthers beat Maple Northwestern 68-3 in the semifinals and Amery 56-11 in the finals.
Ellsworth, 15-7 overall, will take on No. 8 Pewaukee in the state semifinals in Madison. The other semifinal pits No. 1 Lodi vs. No. 4 Oconto Falls.
Ellsworth recorded five pinfalls in under a minute. The Panthers also had two other pinfalls under a 1:20 and two technical falls against Maple Northwestern.
Northwestern only had two reversals and a takedown through 14 matches in the dual meet.
In the finals against Amery resembled the regular-season dual meet between the two Middle Border Conference teams, which Ellsworth won 51-10.
Double winners for the Panthers were Sam Huppert at 112 pounds, Roarke Langer at 125, Taylor Boettcher at 130, Joe Kornmann at 140; Hayden Hauschildt at 145, Noah McLay at 160, Jordan Borst at 171, Corey Deiss at 189, Alex Hoyer at 215 and Nick Oeltjen at heavyweight.
Langer recorded a four-overtime upset win of Amery's Blake Lundgren. Oeltjen had the fastest pinfall for the Panthers in :26 seconds against Amery's Matt Ziegler.
Eleven individual Ellsworth wrestlers will compete in Saturday's Division 2 Osceola Individual Sectional to go to next weekend's individual state tournament in Madison.
