Paint outside the walls
Summer is a great time to get out into the fresh air to paint from life. Crossings offers "Exciting Color in Plein Air Painting," a class designed to teach artists of all experience levels how to use the many expressive moods of color to paint in an outdoor setting.
Instructor Derek Davis will help students learn to see color in new and different ways. He will discuss local color, temperature balance for authentic color, using broken color, arbitrary color schemes, mixing color with additive strategies as well as subtractive, glazing for individual color, high chroma and low chroma color together, and other color theory put into practice.
Students will take home three or four small plein air sketches created in exercises intended to stretch their minds and help them advance their talents.
The class takes place 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Saturday July 27 and Sunday July 28. Cost is $178, and students need to bring their own supplies.
Davis is a second-generation professional artist who has spent his life learning about painting. He is an award-winning artist and president of the Outdoor Painters of Minnesota.
