One dead in early morning standoff in Kellogg

Area schools were locked down and residents evacuated after a report of gunfire shortly after 5 a.m. Thursday in Kellogg, Minn., south of Wabasha, authorities said.

The body of an unidentified male was found in a residence following a nearly five-hour standoff, according to a Wabasha Police Department press release.

Police were called to the residence Thursday morning where a man told officers his roommate had discharged a weapon in their home but did not know if there were injuries, the press release states.

The joint Wabasha and Goodhue County Emergency Response Unit was dispatched to the residence along with Minnesota State Patrol and Wabasha County Sheriff’s deputies, police said.

Law enforcement set up two perimeters around the residence and put nearby schools on lockdown, authorities said.

Officers discovered the body of a deceased male after entering the residence at approximately 10:20 a.m., according to the press release.

The cause of death is under investigation, police said.
