HAGER CITY - The Ellsworth High School baseball team successfully defended its No. 1 ranking in Division 2 by the Wisconsin Baseball Coaches Association with a 7-1 win over No. 6 ranked and Pierce County rival Prescott Friday in front of an overflow crowd at Brown Field.

Ellsworth jumped out to a 5-0 lead in the first inning thanks to RBI-doubles by Nick Taranto and Eric McGregor. The unbeaten Panthers, 9-0 overall and 6-0 in the Middle Border Conference, used their pitching and defense to hold the Cardinals in check for much of the ballgame, handing Prescott its first loss of the season (9-1, 5-1).

Winning pitcher Brady Yanish tossed a two-hitter and got out of a bases loaded jam in the fifth inning. Logan Armstrong got the save. After a shaky start in the sixth inning, Armstrong took control from the pitcher's mound, striking out several Prescott batters and holding them to just one hit. Prescott had 10 strikeouts for the ballgame.

Armstrong also helped the Panthers plate a pair of insurance runs with an RBI-double in the bottom of the sixth. Spencer Schroeder also drove in a run in the sixth.

Alex Helmer had two hits to lead Prescott.
