With the New Year begun, there is no better time to wipe your mental chalkboard and start clean.

As social media continues to dominate lives – both young and old – this year, what if you made it goal to put your phone down and try something new?

Who knows, you may find you have a hidden knack for creativity or just like to get out of the house to beat the winter blues.

The area offers a multitude of classes, clubs and creative outlets to express yourself in person and gives you something different to do.

Locally, SanDe Cards & Crafts offers “Make and Take” a greeting card class, starting at 10 a.m. Saturday Jan. 18 at Sargent’s Nursery. Learn how to create four cards start to finish using stamping techniques, embossing folders and decorating with embellishments.

Down in Zumbrota you can find anything from drum-making to speaking Spanish, polymer clay play to knotting pearl necklaces.

Red Wing’s ArtReach offers unique experiences for almost every age.

From “Pinned!” for adults to “Tween and Teen Pinned!” classes are Pinterest-based projects aimed at certain age groups. Pinterest is an online community where users can post clever, crafty and creative ideas for others to use.

Crossings in Zumbrota has a class for just about everyone in January. Fourteen classes are offered throughout the month. Several classes are open to children and/or teens, as well as adults. Others, such as “Brush & Bordeaux,” where students are invited to bring a bottle of wine to enjoy as they create an acrylic painting of sunflowers, are strictly for ages 21 and over.

Whatever or wherever the class may be, the opportunity to allow yourself a chance at something new or perhaps something re-learned is out there.
