New class start times discussed

Transportation changes The Red Wing School District is looking at changing student transportation, which would result in later start times for secondary students and an earlier start time for elementary students.

The proposed transportation changes would move the start times for all schools from 8:15 a.m. to 8:30 a.m., pushing the high school and middle school start times back close to 30 minutes and the elementary start times almost 30 minutes earlier.

School Board member Steve Anderson said studies are showing high school students benefit from starting school later in the day and elementary students benefit from starting earlier. The focus of any changes should take into account what is best for the students.

“Obviously our biggest goal here is the education of the kids,” he said.

The district would move from a two-tier transportation system, where the buses run in two different waves, to a one-tier system so most buses would run only one route.

A single-tier system is estimated to cost the district an additional $10,000 to $55,000 per year depending on whether 24 or 25 buses are needed.

The board is expected to vote on transportation changes at the March 17 meeting.
