Minnesota ranks first in senior health

For the second year, Minnesota leads the nation in the overall health of its seniors, according to the 2014 America’s Health Rankings Senior Report released last week by United Health Foundation.

The report analyzes health across 34 measures with data from more than a dozen government agencies and research organizations.

Among the highlights earning Minnesota the top spot are 89.6 percent of seniors with prescription drug coverage — the highest in the nation — and the lowest prevalence of seniors with cognitive difficulties.

Areas of concern include growing obesity rates for Minnesota seniors and health disparities between college graduates and seniors with less than a high school education.
