"I've thought about being sheriff my whole career but have never said it out loud out of respect," McNurlin said.

That changed Friday when Albers announced he would not seek re-election in November. McNurlin, the sheriff's right-hand man the past 12 years, announced the same afternoon he will run to fill his boss's shoes.

"Being the sheriff is kind of that ultimate opportunity to be able to serve the people you live with and work with every day on that next level," McNurlin said. "I really do believe I'm helping my neighbors and as I've risen the ranks through the sheriff's office I've always been able to do that."

McNurlin started his career with Goodhue County in 1983 as a jailer/dispatcher. He's held numerous positions with the agency.

The 48-year-old father of one said experience and education are what set him apart from the competition, Red Wing police Sgt. Marty Kelly.

"I understand the Sheriff's Office inside and out," McNurlin said. "It boils down to experience, qualifications and a proven ability to lead. I think that's really what separates us."

McNurlin said as sheriff he would look closely at ways the department can collaborate with other agencies to better utilize resources and save tax dollars. He also wants to continue utilizing cutting-edge technology to help officers do their jobs better.

McNurlin, of Belle Creek Township, said operating a transparent agency is important to him. If elected, he plans on starting a sheriff's advisory board made up of county residents.
