McDonald's to give away backpacks
Red Wing McDonald's will hold "Backpack Saturday" 8 a.m. Aug. 3. The first 100 children in kindergarten through grade 8 who come to McDonald's accompanied by a parent will receive a voucher for a free backpack.
Families are encouraged to arrive early. After the backpack vouchers are gone, children in line will receive a coupon for a free McDonald's meal.
Bloodmobile plans many stops
The American Red Cross will hold several blood drives in the area in earlyAugust. Locations and times include:
• United Methodist Church, Lake City, from 1 to 7 p.m. Aug. 1 and 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. Aug. 2.
• First English Lutheran Church, Cannon Falls, from 1 to 7 p.m. Aug. 7.
• Minnesota Correctional Facility-Red Wing, 1079 Highway 292, from 8:30 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. Aug. 8.
• United Lutheran Church, 628 W. Fifth St., from 1 to 7 p.m. Aug. 8 and 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. Aug. 9.
• Zumbrota VFW from 1 to 7 p.m. Aug. 13.
• Goodhue Community Center from 1 to 7 p.m. Aug. 14.
Burnside exhibit will open at history center
The Goodhue County History Center's Burnside Township exhibit begins Saturday July 27 with a free open house from 1 to 4 p.m.
Burnside Township history is revealed through photographs and artifacts from early settlers and rural schools, churches and businesses.
This is the 16th in the history center's series of township exhibits. The Burnside exhibit will be on display through December 2013.

SE Tech explores bachelor's programs
Minnesota State College-Southeast Technical and St. Mary's University of Minnesota are exploring the possibility of delivering bachelor completion programs on the SE Tech Red Wing campus.
Saint Mary's University representatives will present details of their academic programs, including a variety of business, information technology and healthcare-related programs, during two open houses on Tuesday July 30 and Wednesday July 31 from 2 to 7 p.m. at SE Tech. Anyone interested is encouraged to attend either event.
Kline invites farmers to join ag board
Congressman John Kline is inviting members of Minnesota's agricultural community to join his Agriculture Advisory Board.
"Advisory committee meetings are an important function of what we do in Washington," Kline said. "There are important questions facing Minnesota's agricultural industry. By meeting with my Agriculture Advisory Board, I continually learn more about the issues facing agriculture and can then take those concerns back to Washington."
