Letter: DTMS needs revenue to fulfill city's plans

To the Editor:

I am writing to support Red Wing Downtown Main Street's request for a financial funding commitment from the city.

I am a past President of RW-DTMS, and have participated on committees related to the Downtown Action Plan including former Mayor Donna Dummer's Downtown Real Estate Task Force.

We are 35-year downtown business and property owners. We are members of Red Wing Area Chamber of Commerce, Red Wing Elks Lodge 845, Red Wing Golf Club and I currently serve on the Friends of the Sheldon Board and Harbor Commission.

Resources are limited and priorities must be made to use wisely what we have available to invest in our community. We do know that a lot of time and money has been spent on developing the 2009 Downtown Action Plan and RW-DTMS is the logical organization to facilitate its progress toward completion.

It makes sense that every other DTMS organization receives financial assistance from their city.

The current RW-DTMS board has a long list of worthwhile projects and tasks that will help to increase revenue to the organization and the entire community. The most important focus for DTMS is to strive toward a vibrant and healthy downtown core and that should also be a top priority for our local government after public safety considerations.

We are fortunate to have a hard working board and a dedicated group of volunteers, but an executive director would help provide the leadership to maintain and increase membership and to coordinate other fundraising programs.

A thriving and successful downtown benefits the entire community and the request for support is very modest in comparison to other project requests. Please remember when prioritizing the needs of our city, we only have one downtown, so consider support for RW-DTMS's funding request in the city budget for 2014.
