Lenz helped Fill the Boot
The man who organized Red Wing Fire Department's 2012 Fill the Boot campaign received an award for his efforts.
Matt Lenz received the Fill the Boot Game Changer Award from the Muscular Dystrophy Association in late April. This award is "for individuals who essentially turned a 180 with their organizations," Lenz said.
Last September was the first time firefighters stood on street corners with their boots to collect money for the MDA. That not only turned the department 180 degrees, but gave firefighters a direction with this organization. Lenz organized this fundraiser and went before the City Council to ask for support.
"We were excited to do it whereas I think some people do it to do it," he said.
This is one of the reasons that he said that he was given the award, along with the fact that he was the head of the event. The department collected $7,775 in donations.
Lenz said there are around 20 families in the area that have received help from MDS. When he received the award he had the chance to meet with one of these local families.
"It really hits you in the soft spot and it makes you feel good about what you're doing," he said.
Next year, Lenz said the department has the goal of raising $12,000 to $13,000.
