Legion Baseball: Red Wing wins another twin bill
Red Wing Legion Post 54 picked up its second doubleheader sweep in three days against St. Paul Park Saturday at the Red Wing Athletic Field.
Post 54 won both games by one run, getting a walk-off win in Game 1, 3-2, and a 2-1 victory in eight innings in Game 2.
Marcus Leach pitched 6 1/3 innings in Game 1, allowing two runs on six hits and four walks. He struck out six. Preston Blaney picked up the win in relief, throwing the final 2/3 of an inning and striking out one.
Blaney also finished 1-for-2 with a double and an RBI, bringing in Michael Bigelbach on his double in the bottom of the seventh inning to win Game 1. Bigelbach was 2-for-3, Gunnar Tubbs went 0-for-1 with two walks and a run scored and Ricky Turcotte finished 1-for-3 with a run scored.
In Game 2, Red Wing’s offense struggled, striking out 14 times but its six hits were enough to pull out the sweep.
In the top of the eighth inning – St. Paul Park was the home team – Trey Eckstrom scored from second base on a weak infield single toward third base by Blaney. On the throw from the third baseman, which was knocked down by the first baseman, Eckstrom continued home and beat the throw on a close play at home. Blaney pitched the final 2 1/3 innings to pick up another victory on the mound.
Eckstrom finished 2-for-4 with a run scored, Bigelbach was 2-for-3 with a double and a run and Ricky Turcotte went 1-for-3 with an RBI in Game 2.
Post 54 plays again Monday at home against Northfield. The doubleheader is schedule to begin at 6 p.m.
