Kelly's continues to expand

Kelly Anderson, whose father owned a bar in Red Wing, wanted to serve some of her home cooking in Kelly’s Tap House and Grille.

Rick Anderson, who owns and runs the bar with Kelly Anderson, said they are looking to expand their tap by 20 new beers to have 61 beers on tap on Highway 61.

Anderson said that will make them the largest tap house in southeastern Minnesota.

Rick Anderson said they will be expanding to the second floor in the next couple years and will have a bar and some patio space available.

“I’m really, really excited about this,” Rick Anderson said of his second-floor space. There will be a full bar, bathrooms and a great view of the river, he added.

Rick was in construction before he got into the bar scene with his wife.

They both worked at Kelly’s father’s bar before they decided to open their own bar about 11 years ago.

Rick Anderson said his experience in construction helped him with the redesign of the inside and outside of Kelly’s.

Rick Anderson said he used to be a meat cutter and at Kelly’s they grind their own meat. He and Kelly also went to Oklahoma for a while to learn how to smoke meat, he said.

Nothing is frozen, Rick Anderson said, and Kelly smokes all that she can.

Locally brewed batter

Rick Anderson also said they use local Minnesota beers for all of their beer batters since Kelly has been doing it her whole life.

Rick Anderson also said a lot of family and friends work at the restaurant, which helps keep the local vibe to the business.

“We have a stake in it, it’s not just our job, it’s our life,” he said.

Rick Anderson said the big projects planned for this summer are expanding the deck by 300 square feet, putting a bar on the deck and eventually expanding the restaurant to include the second floor.

The second floor seating area will have space for close to 34 people, he said.

Chamber Award

Rick Anderson said the award from the chamber was recognition for all the hard work they’ve done this year.

“This was a big deal for us,” Rick Anderson said.

He said they have a great cook staff that really did a good job for them and helped make the transition to have a full menu possible.
