Jazz, funk and electronic
Fifth Column, a group of electroacoustic musicians, plays locally tomorrow, Sunday Jan. 19.
The project is directed by composer/improviser Scott Miller, performing a blend of jazz, funk, free improvisation and interactive-electronic music.
Red Wing drummer Mike Arturi joins the group in a performance at the Anderson Center Barn. The show begins at 1:30 p.m.
“Some of the compositions will be in familiar styles, structured around beautiful melodies and harmonies,” Miller explained. “Other pieces will be unique to the moment, involving computer processing of the performer's improvisations in real-time, creating music none of us has ever heard before. But we will work with those computer generated musical ideas to produce new compositions as we stand on stage.”
The core ensemble is a quartet of woodwind performers Pat O’Keefe and Nathan Hanson and laptop performers Scott Miller and Brett Wartchow.
This is the first time Fifth Column and Arturi have performed together, Miller said, and he is group’s fourth guest artist.
“He is also the first drummer we have worked with and I am very excited about what he will bring to our show on Sunday,” said Miller. “The music we are performing is very rhythmically oriented and highly energetic, the perfect musical playground for such a great musician as Mike is.”
With support from the Minnesota State Arts Board, Fifth Column travels to a variety of Minnesota communities and presents concerts featuring local artists.
Miller is a fiscal year 2013 recipient of an Artist Initiative grant from the Minnesota State Arts Board. This activity is made possible by the voters through a grant from the Minnesota State Arts Board, thanks to a legislative appropriation from the arts and cultural heritage fund.
Tickets are available at the door $10 adults, $5 students.
