Hilbert H. Gerdes, 93
Hilbert Henry Gerdes, 93, of Red Wing, died Monday, May 12, 2014 at the Seminary Home in Red Wing.
He was born on April 28, 1921, in Red Wing, to Henry and Emma (Scharpen) Gerdes. He attended local schools and was confirmed at Immanuel Lutheran Church in Hay Creek. He grew up on the family farm and on Aug. 11, 1948, he married Irene Dicke at Immanuel Lutheran Church.
For many years he was a dairy farmer on the farm he grew up on, and also served on the Goodhue County Dairy Herd Association. In 1988, he and Irene moved to Red Wing, where he was a volunteer driver for Meals on Wheels and for the Goodhue County Public Health Services. He was a lifelong member of Immanuel Lutheran Church where he served in various capacities.
Survivors include his wife of 65 years, Irene; one son Philip (Beverly) Gerdes of Rochester; one daughter, Nancy (Dennis) Butterfass of Howard Lake; four grandsons, Michael (Heather) Gerdes of Rochester, Robert (Jessie) Gerdes of Madelia, Matthew Gerdes of Rochester and Bret (Jill) Butterfass of Swanville; one granddaughter, Sara Butterfass of Howard Lake; four great-grandchildren, Alex and Bryce Gerdes and Emma and Anthony Butterfass.
He was preceded in death by his parents; two infant daughters, Katherine and Edith; five sisters, Elsie Alms, Florence Nanninga, Erna Alpers, Rosella Ehlers and Irene Betcher; and one brother, Elmer.
Funeral will be 11 a.m. Thursday, May 15, at Immanuel Lutheran Church in Hay Creek, with Reverend Lowell Sorenson officiating. Burial will be in the church cemetery. Visitation will be from 5-7 p.m. Wednesday, May 14, at the Mahn Family Funeral Home, Bodelson-Mahn Chapel, and at the church for one hour prior to the service.
