Hastings breaks ground on new bridge

Mayor Paul Hicks and city council members were among those who hoisted golden shovels Wednesday morning in the ceremonial groundbreaking for the new Hastings bridge.

The construction phase has officially begun on the new Hastings bridge. Representatives from the city, Mn/DOT, Lunda/Ames and area politicians picked up shovels Wednesday morning to throw some ceremonial dirt at Levee Park.

"This is a great day for Hastings and all who travel along Highway 61," said State Sen. Katie Sieben.

Speakers thanked stakeholders and all involved in the process for their hard work.

They also highlighted some of the aspects that make this project special. First, it incorporates public input on the design, so it will reflect the community's values.

"We will truly make this a community's bridge," said Tom Sorel, commissioner at Mn/DOT.

The bridge will be built as it's being designed, which will save time as well as allow for innovative opportunities during the project, Sorel added.

The bridge is expected to be completed by May 31, 2013.

"We're confident we can get it done," project manager Steve Kordosky said.
