Harry J. "Pudge" Herder Jr., 83
Harry J. "Pudge" Herder Jr. died in the Northfield Hospital on July 8, 2009. He was 83 years old.
Pudge was born Sept. 9, 1925, in Red Wing, the son of Harry Sr. and Pauline (Heinen) Herder. He attended St. Joseph School and graduated from Red Wing Central High in 1943.
The fall of that year he enlisted in the U.S. Army, serving with the 5th Ranger Battalion in Europe. In 1948, after a year of college, Pudge re-enlisted in the Army serving three years with the 82nd Airborne. In 1951 Pudge enlisted in the U.S. Navy and became a corpsman in the Marine Corps. While in Korea in 1952 he lost his leg to a land mine. His actions in Korea earned him a Silver Star and Purple Heart.
@Normal: Pudge then completed his education at the University of Minnesota and spent much of his career teaching science and coaching at Albuquerque Academy in New Mexico.
Pudge is survived by his wife, Ann (Holt); and daughters Susan of San Francisco, Calif., and Abigail of Buena Vista, Colo.; three brothers, Richard of Red Wing, James of Houston, Texas, and Robert of Apple Valley, Minn.
