Gymnastics: Wingers score season high at New Prague
Facing third-ranked (2A) New Prague on Friday was a daunting task. But the Red Wing gymnastics team was able to leave New Prague on a high note as the team set a season-high score in a 145.3-124.125 loss.
“Coming in, we had a goal of 120 points,” said Wingers co-head coach Lisa Hanson. “We had a wonderful meet tonight.”
The high point for Red Wing came on the balance beam, as three varsity gymnasts stuck their routine, Hanson said. Leading the team on the beam was Morgan Hughes, who took seventh with a score of 8.2 Abigail Rohan chipped in with a 6.8275.
“It’s a great sign that our girls are refining their skills and using their practice time to improve their routine,” Hanson said of the team’s beam performance.
Irina Anderson had the Wingers’ highest-place finish, taking fifth in the vault with an 8.5. Hughes followed suit with a sixth-place score of 8.4.
Anderson finished sixth in the uneven bars (7.55), and Mackenzie Irwin was Red Wing’s top performer in the floor exercise with an 8.55.
Red Wing returns to action at 11 a.m. today in the River Falls invitational.
