Competing in its first of three meets this week, the Red Wing gymnastics team faced a daunting task on Tuesday against Northfield, Class 1A’s top-ranked teams.

“We’re going from having just three meets so far this season to having three in a week,” said Wingers’ co-head coach Lisa Hanson. “It’s a very busy week for us. Hopefully, we can keep everyone strong.”

The host Raiders showed they were worthy of the state’s top ranking, pulling away with a 140.05-118.75 victory.

“It was a little harder meet for us, but we had some good things happen,” Hanson said.

Red Wing’s best effort came from the vault, where Irina Anderson led the team with a score of 8.75. Back from injury, Abigail Rohan scored an 8.4 on the vault.

“We had five girls who did a very nice job on the vault,” Hanson said.

On the balance beam, Carlie Sandstrom led the Wingers with an 8.0, followed by Rohan’s score of 7.6.

The Wingers struggled in the balance beam, as Irwin scored a team-high 6.5.

Jordan Munson and Mackenzie Irwin were Red Wing’s leaders in the floor exercise with 8.275 and 7.925, respectively.

“All our girls tumbled well on the floor,” Hanson said. “Our scores on the floor weren’t as high as they were last week. There were some minor things and gymnastics is such a subjective sport where any anything can change your score.”

Things don’t get any easier for Red Wing this week, as the Wingers compete against the third-ranked team in Class 2A, New Prague, on Friday. Then on Saturday, Red Wing is back in the gym to compete in the River Falls invitational.
