The gun was reported missing by Dane Murphy, Red Wing, on Feb. 21. Murphy told police he had been dropping off recyclables at Goodhue County Recycling Center, 3745 W. Highway 61, and that the gun had accidentally been put in one of the recycling bins.

When he later returned and went through the bags of recycling he had dropped off, Murphy said the gun was missing.

Police had asked for the public's help in finding the gun, and said the weapon could be turned in to the police department with no questions asked.
