Golf: Red Wing, Lake City boys and girls advance
Two of the top girls golf teams in the state squared off in the Section 1AA-East meet on Friday, and Red Wing got by Lake City on Day 1.
The Wingers took first place with a team score of 311, edging the Tigers’ 317 during Friday’s sub-section meet at Eastwood Golf Course in Rochester. Both teams have qualified for the Section 1AA championship meet.
Red Wing and Lake City proved to be miles ahead of the rest of the east, with Caledonia/Spring Grove finishing third with 402.
Stephanie Herzog took medalist honors, leading Red Wing with an even-par round of 71. Teammate Sophia Yoemans placed second with 75, and Nicole Schammel and Solveig Christenson completed the team score by scoring 81 and 84, respectively. Kayla Oberding shot a 93 and Reagan Haley finished with 96.
Emily Schimbeno led Lake City’s round with a 77, placing third overall. Lexi Geolat (78) and Erin Pennington (79) placed fourth and fifth, respectively. Claire Gruber rounded out the Tigers’ team score with an 83.
In the boys’ meet, Red Wing and Lake City each qualified for the section championship, with the Wingers’ 318 edging the Tigers’ 330.
Fritz Belisle and Cole Siewert led Red Wing’s round by carding 77 and 78, respectively. Zach Sachen had a 79 and Evan Morem pieced together an 84 to cap off the team score. John Wedrickas had an 87, and Andrew Petterson finished with 88.
Lake City’s Cory Dick secured medalist honors with a 76, holding off Belisle by a stroke. The Tigers’ round was finished off by Parker Schurhammer (81), Brennan Rothgarn (86) and Thomas Huettl (87).
The Zumbrota-Mazeppa girls golf team qualified for the Section 1AA final four after taking second place in the West sub-section meet Friday at Eastwood Golf Course in Rochester. The Cougars had a score of 364, trailing Stewartville’s 360.
Leading the Cougar girls was Kari Thorson, who finished in third place with a round of 86. Stewartville’s Mackayla Olsen took medalist honors after carding an 80, beating teammate Mackenzie Olsen’s round of 81.
Following Thorson, Molly Lawler and Emily Krohn each carded 92s, and Emma Schneider finished with 94.
In the boys’ meet, Z-M placed fifth with a team score of 348. Clinching the two team spots in next week’s section championship was Byron (322) and Rochester Lourdes (327).
Two Cougars qualified for the section meet as individuals, with Isaac Leonard shooting a 77 and Noah Erickson carding an 87. Rounding out the rest of Z-M’s team score was Joey O’Gorman and Alec Hunstad, who each finished with 92.
Clinching medalist honors for the boys was Byron’s Hunter Fjerstad, who won by four strokes with a 72.
The Section 1AA championship meet will take place Wednesday May 28 at Eastwood Golf Course in Rochester.
