Emily Otteson had to roll with the ebbs and flows of tennis on Monday.

Facing off with East Ridge’s Regan Dolezal at No. 1 singles, the Red Wing sophomore fell 6-4 in the first set before forcing a third set with a 6-4 second-set victory. Otteson took command in the tiebreaker, but Dolezal would not go down quietly.

“Emily went up 8-4, and then the other girl (Dolezal) really started playing some positive tennis,” said Wingers head coach Matt Kavanagh. “Then it became 8-all, 9-all, 10-all.”

Ultimately, Otteson held off Dolezal 12-10 to win the three-set match.

“It was good to see (Otteson) hold her nerve in that match,” Kavanagh said. “The whole team is glad to get that win there.”

Kavanagh continued, “Regan had a solid variety of pace and she hit some heavy balls. Emily did a good job standing her ground and not letting the ball overpower her.”

Otteson would provide the only point for Red Wing as the visiting Raptors won the match 6-1 at Twin Bluff Middle School.

The Wingers had a pair of three-set losses, with Morley Struss falling to Sophia Stark in No. 3 singles (6-1, 4-6, 6-3) and Lauren Brooks and Lauren Grant losing to Katelyn Champoux and Allison Marshall at No. 1 doubles (7-6, 6-2, 10-8).

“It was a close meet. There were only two matches where we didn’t have a shot,” Kavanagh said. “We’ll need to find a way to start a little better as a team. When you lose the first set, it’s hard to come back from that.”

Red Wing plays a pair of road meets this week, traveling to Rochester Century on Tuesday for a dual and Hastings on Thursday for a triangular with Northfield and the host Raiders.
