Girls Tennis: State bid falls short for Red Wing pair
ROCHESTER – In hopes of reaching the state tournament, the Red Wing duo of Emily Stegora and Nicole Schammel got off to a fast start in the Section 1AA semifinals.
Playing against the section’s No. 1-seeded team, Kylie Boyer and Kate Rosenow of Rochester Mayo, Stegora and Schammel jumped out to a 2-1 first-set lead. Prior to Tuesday’s match, Boyer and Rosenow had not surrendered a point in individual section play.
“They were so excited about beating Mayo (in the two games),” said Wingers’ head coach Matt Kavanagh.
Then, the section’s top team regrouped and reaffirmed their dominance, winning the next 11 points on the way to winning the semifinal match 6-2, 6-0 at the Rochester Athletic Club.
Boyer and Rosenow ended up winning the section title with a 6-1, 7-5 win over Rochester Century’s Katherine Aney and Madison Kircher.
“(Emily and Nicole) dropped their guard a little bit and the other girls started playing better as well,” Kavanagh said.
“The one thing (Boyer and Rosenow) were doing really well was hitting down at our players’ feet. It’s very hard to defend a volley when you try to dig it out from your feet. They were playing a lot of golf shots with the racket, and the ball would leap at the same time from off the ground.”
Stegora and Schammel got one more chance at a state tournament berth, playing in the true second-place match against Mayo’s other pairing, Delany Edwards and Meryl Nath.
After falling to Aney and Kircher in the semifinals, 6-4, 6-2, Edwards and Nath were able to dispatch of Stegora and Schammel in a 6-3, 6-4 victory.
In the Section 1AA singles championship, Owatonna’s Briana Hartmann took care of Lakeville North’s Lori Ahuja, 6-2, 6-2.
