Girls Tennis: Lake City falls to Rochester Lourdes

Should the Lake City girls tennis team pull off the upset Wednesday in the quarterfinals of the Section 1A tournament, its reward will likely be a date with Rochester Lourdes, who just throttled the Tigers, 7-0, Tuesday afternoon.

“We played very well,” said Lake City head coach Dave Toole. “But Lourdes is really good.”

Two bright spots for the Tigers were at No. 2 singles and No. 2 doubles. Emily Albright won her first set at No. 2 singles before falling 2-6, 6-2, 10-8. Katie Coyle and Carley Cronin also won their first set at No. 2 doubles, but lost 2-6, 6-3, 6-3.

The fifth-seeded Tigers (6-12) will head to Stewartville Wednesday to face the fourth-seeded Tigers.

“We’re battling an injury bug with a few kids as well,” Toole said. “But I think we have a good chance at at least six spots.”

The two teams split the season series, each winning 4-3 against the other. The winner will face either Lourdes, the top seed, or Winona Cotter or St. Croix Lutheran.
