Girls Swimming: Wingers place sixth at final Missota championship
Racing in the final Missota Conference championship meet on Saturday, the Red Wing girls swimming and diving team finished in sixth place with a team score of 148.
Winning the final Missota championship was Chanhassen, which scored 476 team points, holding off Farmington’s 423. Chaska (352), Northfield (338) and Shakopee (190) rounded out the top five.
The Wingers’ top finish came courtesy of senior Ashley Thompson, who placed fifth in the 100-yard breaststroke with a time of 1 minute, 14.64 seconds. Thompson also placed sixth individually in the 200 individual medley at 2:26.57.
Claire King had the team’s only other top 10 individual finish, placing 10th in the 50 freestyle at 26.96.
Red Wing also had three relay teams finish in sixth place. The 200 medley relay (Hannah Kolsky, Thompson, Carly Boisen, King) had a time of 2:06.67, the 200 freestyle relay (Thompson, Boisen, Polina Duchelle, King) finished in 1:52.15, and the 400 freestyle relay (Kolsky, LeEtta McDowell, Kelly Colwell, Nina Kriese) had a time of 4:16.61.
With the regular season over and the Missota Conference in the rear-view mirror, Red Wing shifts its attention to the Section 1A championship meet, set for next week at the Rochester Recreation Center. Prelims are set for Nov. 6, and the championship meet takes place Nov. 8. Last year, the Wingers had two swimmers qualify for the state meet at sections, including Thompson, who took 15th at state in the 100 breaststroke.
