Girls Swimming: Olson, Thompson, three relays qualify for section finals
Two individuals and three relay teams will represent the Red Wing girls swimming and diving team in Friday’s Section 1A finals at the Rochester Rec Center.
Ingrid Olson placed 10th in the 50 freestyle in 25.51 seconds, and sixth in the 500 freestyle in 5 minutes, 32.59 seconds, more than four seconds better than her seed time.
Ashley Thompson took 12th in the 200 individual medley in 2:23.39, and 10th in 100 breaststroke in 1:12.30.
The top 16 times in each event qualified for the finals.
The 200-yard medley relay team of Olson, Thompson, Carly Boisen and Claire King took seventh in 1:58.22 to kick off Wednesday’s qualifying events. Later, the 200 freestyle relay team of Thompson, Boisen, King and Olson took seventh with a time of 1:44.79.
Then the 400 freestyle relay team of Nina Kriese, Hannah Kolsky, Abby Sekus and Polina Duchelle placed 11th in a time of 4:04.1 to close the preliminary meet.
Lydia Miller just missed qualifying in diving, scoring 174.35, which was good for 17th, 6.65 points behind the final qualifying spot.
Friday’s finals will begin at 6 p.m. back at the Rochester Rec Center. The top two finishers in each event, as well as any girl or relay team that meets the state standard, will earn a berth in the state meet which will take place Nov. 18-20 at the University of Minnesota Aquatic Center.
Olson’s time in the 50 freestyle is less than a half-second off the standard time of 25.04.
