Girls Soccer: Wingers roughed up by Holy Angels

For 19 minutes, winless Red Wing hung with Class 1A’s third-ranked team, Academy of Holy Angels, in a scoreless contest. But it was only a matter of time for the Stars to get their bearings as they blew out the Wingers 11-0 Tuesday in Richfield.

The scoreboard looked ugly, but it was a positive step for Red Wing, thanks in large part to the solid start on defense.

“They’re winning games 10-0 pretty regularly, so we were pretty happy with that,” Wingers’ co-head coach Paul McNamee said of the start.

Up 4-0 at halftime, Holy Angels tacked on seven more scores in the second half to put up double digits for the third time this season.

“You can be disappointed with a loss in a close game, and you can be happy with a result like this, even if the scoreboard looks like that,” McNamee said. “We were proud of the girls’ effort against one of the best teams in the state.”

Red Wing (0-7-2, 0-4 Missota) come home Thursday for a game against Northfield. There will be free admission for students that come to Thursday’s game in Red Wing apparel.
