Tuesday served as an improvement for the Red Wing girls soccer team, but wins still elude the Wingers as they fell 2-0 at home to Byron.

Coming off a 7-1 loss to Albert Lea on Saturday, Red Wing co-head coaches David Thurston and Paul McNamee knew tweaks in the defense were needed. And after the heat forced the team indoors on Monday, the Wingers sat down, watched film and made the necessary changes.

“We were able to see what needed to be fixed,” Thurston said. “We did marking up more and we put in a new formation to accommodate where Albert Lea was scoring against us on Saturday.”

In the 18th minute, the Bears got on the board with a goal from Chanelle Logan. Then in the 26th minute, Byron took a 2-0 lead on a goal by Madison Schimek.

The Wingers’ defense tightened up, not allowing a goal in the second half. Goalkeeper Serena Scanlon had 12 saves in the loss.

“(Tuesday’s game) was a vast improvement over Saturday’s game,’ Thurston said.

Red Wing (0-2) is back in action on Sept. 3 at Winona Cotter.
