Girls Soccer: Late goal buries Lake City in 1A playoffs
As Byron put in the game’s lone goal with 12 minutes left in Tuesday’s Section 1A girls soccer playoff game, 13th-seeded Lake City saw its season come to a close, 1-0, in Byron.
But even after the season-ending loss, Tigers’ head coach Mark Spence said the girls weren’t about to hang their heads low.
“We played an outstanding game tonight,” Spence said. “It was a tough one, but the girls are very proud of how they played and I’m proud of them as well.”
Lake City goalkeeper Beth Petersen came up with 12 saves, including five spectacular saves, according to Spence. But a heads-up play late in the second half by the fourth-seeded Bears marked the end of the Tigers’ season.
“They had a breakaway and took the shot,” Spence said. “(Petersen) made the save, and they had another player there for the rebound at the right place at the right time.”
With the victory, Byron will face fifth-seeded Dover-Eyota at home Thursday.
Lake City ends the year at 3-13 overall.
