Girls golf: Wingers win Section 1AA crown
Red Wing fired a 322 Friday at Eastwood Golf Course in Rochester to run away with the Section 1AA title. The Wingers won by 65 strokes and clinched a trip to the school's 12th state tournament.
The Class AA state meet will be held June 15 and 16 at the Ridges at Sand Creek in Jordan, Minn. Red Wing has been the runner-up to Minnewaska Area each of the past three seasons.
"If we've got any chance to go over to the Ridges and make some noise this is how we have to play," Red Wing coach Mark Herzog said.
He said the key to Red Wing's success was the way the girls struck the ball.
"They hit a lot of fairways and for the most part were pretty pleased with how they hit the ball," Herzog said.
Katie Kesti finished second at the two-day event with a 160, ending up two strokes behind Byron's Jordan Price. Kesti shot a 79 for the Wingers on the second day.
Danielle Brooks came in third (161), Marisa Toivonen placed fifth (168) and Ashley Brooks and Nikki Pasch tied for sixth (169). Anna Busch came in ninth with a 172.
After a shooting a 93 on Day 1, Busch shot a 79 Friday and tied Kesti for the team's best round.
"She never got in a lot of trouble off the tee," Herzog said. "She played great I was really pleased to see that."
Ashley Brooks and Pasch, Red Wing's fourth and fifth golfers, both shot an 84 Friday.
"Eighty-four, 84, 79, that's a great sign if that happens from the middle to the bottom to your lineup," Herzog said.
Lake City's Abby Gruber qualified for the state meet as an individual by finishing with a two-round total of 170. She was the third of five individuals not on the Red Wing team to qualify for state.
Gruber carded an 86 Friday, which was the Tigers' best score of the day.
Lake City shot a 361 on the second day and finished second with a two-round total of 716.
Jennifer Schmidt (90), Mary Schmidt (91) and Annalise Wallerich (94) contributed to the Tigers' team score.
Zumbrota-Mazeppa's Nikki Westlake was her school's highest individual finisher. She fired a 95 Friday and registered a total of 189. That was good for 21st place.
