Girls Golf: Wingers tied for first after first round of sections
Red Wing is tied for first place after the first round of the Section 1AAA tournament Thursday at Cannon Golf Club in Cannon Falls.
The Wingers shot a 356 to tie Northfield. Lakeville North and Rochester Mayo tied at 359.
"It was a really difficult day today because of the wind," Red Wing head coach Mark Herzog said. "It was blowing right from the time they teed off. That back nine is really difficult when it's windy and it gave us a lot of problems."
Stephanie Herzog had an 80 to lead the Wingers while Nicole Schammel shot an 84.
"Nicole really battled hard at 84," Mark Herzog said. "She just finished really strong for us and Stephanie also came in real strong at the end. They gave us a great 1-2 punch and I thought that's kept us in this thing here. We've got a shot."
Kayla Oberding shot a 92, Maddie Flack and Reagan Haley each tallied 100s and Solveig Christenson finished with a 101 to round out Red Wing's scores.
"I was pleased with the way the girls kept hanging in there today because there were a lot of shots that the wind just took and put into a lot of hazards," Mark Herzog said.
The final round of the section tournament will take place Monday at Cannon Golf Club. The first tee times are at approximately 10 a.m.
