Battling through the elements at Willingers Golf Club in Northfield on Thursday, the Red Wing girls golf team finished in second place in the 12-team tournament.
The Wingers finished with a team score of 342, which was bested by Wayzata’s round of 318. Defending Class 3A state champion Edina placed third with 345.
“I thought it was a really good day for us,” said Red Wing head coach Mark Herzog. “It’s a very hard course and it was very wet, and it was only 45 (degrees) with a little breeze. … We’ve been short on practice, too. We played nine holes (on Wednesday) and four holes on Tuesday. Monday, we didn’t play at all.”
Leading the way for the Wingers was Stephanie Herzog, who had a team-best round of 75. Nicole Schammel followed with an 82, and Reagan Haley and Kayla Oberding rounded out the team scoring with 92 and 93, respectively. Solveig Christenson and Sophia Yoemans finished with 94 and 95, respectively.
Sarah Burnham of Wayzata, last year’s Class 3A state medalist, took top honors on Thursday with a 69, followed by Celia Kuenster of Cretin-Derham Hall (72) and Stephanie Herzog. Kuenster placed third in Class 3A last year, while Herzog finished tied for 10th.
Red Wing is back on the course Friday for a Missota Conference meet at the New Prague Golf Course.
