Frigid temperatures and rain slowed the Red Wing girls golf team down in Shakopee on Wednesday, causing an hour delay on the course. But the Wingers were able to persevere and take first place at Stonebrooke Golf Club.

Red Wing won the meet with a team score of 329, holding off New Prague which finished with 336.

Before the rain started kicking up late in the meet, the Wingers' strong start helped secure the first-place finish.

"You look at the scorecards, it was a tale of two halves for everyone on the course," said Red Wing head coach Mark Herzog. "The girls did a good job out there in the first 10-to-12 holes. ... It was a really difficult day, and I was pleased with how the girls played through everything."

Stephanie Herzog was the Wingers' top golfer on Wednesday, finishing in second place overall with a round of 74. Nicole Schammel was fourth overall with an 80, while Solveig Christenson shot an 87. Kayla Oberding, Reagan Haley and Sophia Yoemans each carded 88s.

"Considering the conditions, we played really well," Mark Herzog said. "At one point, rain was coming down sideways."

New Prague's Kenzie Neisen took medalist honors with a 72.

On Saturday, Red Wing heads to Mount Frontenac Golf Course to play in the Lake City invitational. Eastview, Lakeville North, Northfield, Park, Providence Academy and Visitation are scheduled to also be in the field.
