Girls Basketball: Z-M's offense struggles in loss to Pine Island
Zumbrota-Mazeppa was within striking distance of knocking off one of the Hiawatha Valley League Blue Division’s top teams, Pine Island, on Tuesday. Ultimately, the Cougars’ shooting woes continued and the team lost their fifth straight as the Panthers won 44-40.
“It’s kind of becoming a trend for us,” Z-M head coach Scott Paukert said after his team shot 27.3 percent from the field (15 of 55).
“It was close the whole way,” Paukert added. “We should have taken advantage and gotten the win.”
Carley Henning had a strong night for the Cougars with 14 points, eight rebounds and three steals. Kalli Paukert added 11 points and six boards, and Tayler Mort tallied seven points in the loss.
Sam Heeren was Pine Island’s top scorer with 14 points. She did most of her damage at the free-throw line where she went 9 of 12, including 8 of 10 in the second half. Noelle Langworthy came away with 11 points in the victory.
Trying to stop its skid, Z-M (3-7, 2-5 HVL) hosts Lake City on Thursday.
