Girls Basketball: Z-M gets historic win over Lourdes
For the first time in at least 26 years, Zumbrota-Mazeppa won a girls basketball game against Rochester Lourdes. And to put the cherry on top, the Cougars spoiled the opening of the Eagles’ new gymnasium with the 47-38 victory.
Z-M head coach Scott Paukert said he was all smiles after the game, even if his team didn’t quite fully appreciate the history involved.
“They were excited,” Paukert said. “But I don’t think they really knew we hadn’t beaten them forever. We had talked about the new gym and how neat it would be to give them a loss in the first game in there. We definitely celebrated.”
The Cougars were led by Tayler Mort’s double-double of 11 points and 11 rebounds. Mort also added two steals and a blocked shot. Alyssa Quam led Z-M in scoring, netting a career-high 12 points. Kalli Paukert chipped in 10 points while Carley Henning added nine, completing a very balanced scoring line for the Cougars.
Paukert, Z-M’s point guard, led the charge in the second half, according to her father/coach, hitting a 3-pointer with a six-point deficit that ignited a 17-2 run to close the game. Paukert and Henning, both seniors, and juniors Quam and Mort, used their years on the court together to come away with the win.
The Cougars (2-2) will play Stewartville at 7:15 p.m. Tuesday.
