Nothing slows down a basketball game quite like the slow march to the free throw line in a close game. And nothing makes a game closer than necessary quite like missing those free throws.

That was the scenario Red Wing faced against Holy Angels Tuesday evening. An 11-point halftime lead was cut to three points late, forcing the Stars to put the Wingers on the charity stripe eight times. Red Wing hit just a couple of those shots, but that proved to be enough in a 47-44 Missota Conference victory for the Wingers.

“They played the foul game, and it didn’t go well for us,” said Red Wing coach Dave Muelken. “The two we made were big because the cut it to three each time. We could have iced it earlier, but we were on the road and got a big win against a good team.”

McKenzie Muelken led the Wingers with 18 points and four steals. Maddie Faas chipped in nine points and seven rebounds while McKayla Muelken added seven points. McKenzie Cota pulled in seven rebounds.

Red Wing (5-6 overall, 1-1 Missota) will stay in league play Friday, welcoming Northfield () to Sonju Gymnasium.
